A childhood desire to play with knives and a penchant for carving into tree bark inspired Mark Evans to create large-scale micro-sculptures from leather as an adult. Working with blades and knives of varying thickness, Evans carves photorealistic scenes, symbols, and figures into pieces of leather.
He favors the material for its inherent juxtapositions: it is both functional and aesthetic, ancient and modern, sensual and masculine.
An obsessive perfectionist, Evans works with a surgical precision, taking months to complete a single artwork. By employing leather as both medium and material, he brings its primal, ancient qualities into the modern era. At the same time, he pays homage to prehistoric traditions through the nature-based symbols and imagery he chooses to carve.
Artcatto is proud to represent such a talented artist.
