Guillaume Corneille was born in 1922 in Liege. With Dutch parents, he went on to train in Drawing at the Amsterdam’s Rijksakademie between 1940 and 1943. Having started his career with a naturalistic approach, he slowly went on to paint in the Cubist style, influenced by the French painters.
Having co-founded COBRA – a famous experimental artists group – he soon went on to become a leading abstract expressionist painter. His paintings are populated by flowers, birds and women and marked by the use of vibrant colour.
Corneille died in 2010, at the age of 88.
